According to The Center for the Study of Women in Film in 2017, "women comprised 18% of all directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers. Last year, only 1% of films employed 10 or more women in the above roles. In contrast, 70% of films employed 10 or more men."

This is virtually unchanged since 1998.

And only a 7% jump since the 50s.

88% of films in 2017 had no women directors
83% had no women writers
45% had no women exec. producers
28% had no women producers
80% had no women editors
96% had no women cinematographers
Slightly less than one-third or 30% of
films had no or 1 woman in the above

This is to highlight some of the amazing women who broke through the noise.

Because it's hard to become what you cannot see.

And we need to do better.

Be better.

Create more.

Tell more of the stories that need to be told, from every point of view, heritage, and heartbeat.

These are some of the women who do.

Patty Jenkins: Estimated #3 grossing movie of 2017 with Wonderwoman + an Emmy Nomination.

Rachel Morrison: 1st woman nominated for "Best Cinematography"

Lucy Liu: Amazing Chinese-American director and Emmy Winning Actress. Also in Kill Bill, one of my favorite movies of all time.

Greta Gerwig: One of 5 women nominated ever for "Best Director"

Kathryn Bigelow: only woman to ever win the Academy Award for Best Director (so Far)

Ava Duvernay: Won Emmy for "Outstanding Documentary" & Nominated for "Best Documentary" Oscar

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy: TWO "Best Documentary Short" Oscar Wins.

Jodie Foster: 2 Oscar Wins. 55 wins & 46 nominations. Actress. Director. Producer. Overall amazing and inspiring.

Kathleen Kennedy: My personal hero. 8 Oscar nominations. All-around amazing person and basically Queen of the Star Wars Universe. And this snippet from Fortune's article about the producer.

And while I talk about their achievements, they are so much more than that. They are icons of hope and aspiration. Testaments of hard work and a dream. I hope to inspire the idea of we can too. YOU can too. Happy #femalefilmmakerfriday friends.
